Home Depot Worker Injured

March 23, 2005

Richard Osbourne, a worker for Seattle-based Rainier Floors, sustained head injuries after the hose he was guiding to pour concrete became plugged.

According to the police, the clogged hose whipped around and hit him in his head, sending him to the ground. Mr. Osbourne was working in the capacity of an employee of Rainier Floors when the accident occurred. Rainier Floors was hired as a subcontractor in the building of a new Home Depot store.

When emergency responders arrived, they had to navigate the steel rebar that latticed the area for the new floor. Mr. Osbourne was taken to the hospital and released Thursday night.

Project Manager Steve Crocker said that the accident was the first at the site since construction began at the Oak Harbor location last summer. According to Mr. Crocker, the site has very stringent safety regulations.

Mr. Crocker stated that each subcontractor must submit a written outline of its safety requirements before work can begin. Representatives from each subcontractor must also attend weekly safety meetings. In addition, he indicated that a safety auditor has made at least six site visits.

The new home-improvement store is expected to open April 28and will employ approximately 125 people.
