Train Kills Two Teens Walking Along Tracks

January 6, 2006

Two young men were walking on the Burlington Northern Tracks just south of Tacoma when they were struck by a train. The two teens were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which occurred on Sunday

According to rail officials, the Union Pacific freight train was traveling from Tacoma to Portland when it hit the two boys.

Police believe that the two are aged somewhere in between 18 and 20 years old.

According to a spokesman from Union Pacific, the railroad conductor hit the horn repeatedly as it approached the two traveling about 40 miles per hour. One of the boys was walking on the tracks and the other was walking next to it.

As the train got closer the conductor attempted to make an emergency stop but did not have enough room not to hit the two boys.

The two were hit along the railroad's double line, causing a complete closure of the line. The accident occurred at about 4:10 p.m., just 12 miles south of Tacoma and 4 mile north of Steilacoom.

The train consisted of three locomotives and 73 cars. None of them derailed due to the braking and there were no reported injuries to any railroad employees.

Authorities from the railroad stated that there were no pedestrian crossings close to where the accident occurred.

Investigators are still trying to gather any other information related to the accident. They have not released the identities of the two men.
