An apartment complex on First Avenue between Blanchard and Bell streets had to be evacuated early Sunday when fire broke out on the third floor. The low-income apartment complex has 48 units, with 46 residents.
Nine residents were injured and treated for smoke inhalation.For some residents of the building, the only way to escape the fire was to jump while others waited until help arrived.Several of the residents were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, including one firefighter.The Seattle Fire Department is now trying to figure out how the fire started."It looks like one unit was gutted by fire damage and there is some smoke damage on the third floor," said Helen Fitzpatrick of the Seattle Fire Dept.Nineteen apartments in the building were damaged enough by the fire to prevent residents from returning for the next few nights. The American Red Cross will find shelter for them until they are able to return home.The fire department estimated fire damage at $200,000.
