Doctor's License Suspended After Overdose Deaths

June 23, 2005

An osteopathic physician's license was suspended by the state after allegations that he over-prescribed controlled drugs that led to several deaths of his patients due to overdose.

Dr. Lance W. Christiansen has been operating three clinics-- one in Toledo, one in Onalaska, and a third in Winlock. All three clinics are now shut down.

His license was suspended Wednesday by the Board of Osteopathic Medicine and the Department of Health.

They say that he might be a serious danger to the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

Mount St. Helens Medical Clinic was one of three run by Christiansen.

In court papers it is said that Dr. Christianen "prescribed morphine and oxycontin. The medical records do not justify these prescriptions."

Other accusations against Dr. Christiansen are

(a) he failed to perform physical exams on eight patients;

(b) made unsubstantiated diagnoses;

(c) failed to maintain adequate records; and

(d) failed to consult with specialists or follow

the recommendations of specialists.

According to the charges, six of the patients died of overdoses of drugs, including methadone, prescribed to them by Christiansen.

One of the patients' death was determined to be a suicide and the others were accidental.
