Teen Drowns In Lake Chelan

October 18, 2005

Rescue crews were able to save an 18-year-old from a Lake Chelan canoeing incident but his 17-year-old friend turned up dead on Sunday morning.

According to the Sheriff, a Chelan County Sheriff's helicopter came across the body of Anthony Sanchez of Bellevue this morning.

His body was found in about 25 feet of water about 100 yards from where the other occupant of the canoe, Jim Baker of Renton, was pulled out of the water last night, near Wapato Point.

Rescue teams responded to a 911 call at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, which reported calls for help coming from the lake. The call came from a resident that was already getting his boat ready to search while his wife called authorities.

Deputy Jeremy Mathena was on the scene within a couple of minutes and began searching with Reid in the boat.

The first boy was spotted floating face-up in the water in less than five minute. They retrieved him, made a quick search of the immediate area, but then headed back to attend to the condition that the boy was in.

Reid and Mathena's quick action has been attributed as having saved the 18-year-old's life.
