A female worker died when a container fell on top of her at the Port of Tacoma on Saturday.
The 40-year-old woman was walking past a ship as containers were being unloaded. When a crane malfunction caused it to take too many containers, a 40-foot container tilted and fell on the woman.
The container was empty but it weighted four tons.
'For some reason, this crane at one point picked up a larger amount of containers than usual,' Tacoma police spokeswoman Tracy Conaway said. 'That knocked this lone one off the ship.'
The woman was walking to a break with several co-workers when the container began falling. They shouted a warning, but the woman was unable to get out of the way, Conaway said.
Police said the victim died on impact at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Police ruled the death accidental, but state and federal workplace safety officials were expected to investigate.
Conaway said the victim was a member of Local 23 of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. Her identity was not immediately released.
