Toddler Injured By Pit Bull Dog Bite

September 1, 2005

In the aftermath of an injury attack by a pit bull on a toddler in Gig Harbor, Washington, the little girl's family and the dog's owners are beginning to point fingers at each other.

Krissi Mercier and her daughter, 22-month-old Taylor, were sitting outside of their apartment in Gig Harbor when Bruno, a 3-year-old pit bull owned by Chris Winkleman, attacked the little girl.

Mercier says the little girl said that she thought she had gotten bit and then blood began pouring from her the middle of her neck.

According to doctors the dog bite had just missed her jugular vein.

Winkleman believes that the dog was just being himself, a guard dog. He expresses remorse over what happened.

Winkleman is not disputing the fact that Bruno did bite Taylor, but is arguing the circumstances surrounding the attack. He says that Bruno was on a leash and it was Taylor who was not being watched.

Bruno is currently in the animal shelter, being held in the rabies quarantine section at the Humane Society. He is being held but according to the authorities his days are numbered.

Taylor's family says Taylor will make a full recovery, but her medical bills will top out at around $10,000.

Bruno's owners say their loss is priceless.
