Pit Bull Still At Large Following Attack

October 20, 2005

As of Monday night, a dangerous pit bull was on the loose in Seattle after being part of an attack on a White Center man.

Two other pit bulls were involved as well but were shot and killed by sheriff's deputies following the attack.

Vern Darrah crossed paths with three growling pit bulls in his yard and his immediate response was to panic.

But as he attempted to escape the situation, the dogs followed him and cornered him inside his house.

The dog bites went directly through Darrah's jeans and caused injuries in three different places. He had a total of four bites on his calf, thigh and groin area.

The pits bulls were still vicious and hostile when Animal Control and King County deputies arrived.

Animal Control officers are trained and they also have the equipment needed to control and corral unruly dogs, but the pit bulls involved were so out of control that the Animal Control officer could not even step foot out of the truck.

Deputies were required to use force and shot and killed one dog, and later chased and killed another. The third dog got away.

An officer from the King County Sheriff's Office said that although the dogs had run off, that they were trying to avoid another attack since they were considered extremely dangerous especially traveling in a pack.

Officers are not blaming the breed of the dogs, but are placing the responsibility on the dog owners for an attack like this.

Just before the attack on Darrah, the dogs attempted to attack a woman only few blocks away. She fought them off with her umbrella, but was subsequently injured while trying to run away from the pack.

The Sheriff's Department still has no idea who the owners of the dog are because the dogs were not wearing any collars.
