Tragedy stuck on the first day of school for some students in the Mukilteo School District. A bus swerved to avoid an accident and struck two Olympic View Middle School who were waiting to board their school bus this morning.
It was to be the first day of eight grade for the two girls. The accident occurred just about a mile away from the school.
The two eighth grade girls were boarding the bus when the accident happened along Mukilteo Speedway.
According to police, the school bus had just stopped to pick up the girls at the bottom of a hill on Mukilteo. Coming from the opposite direction, a car was approaching the bus stop.
The driver of the car was coming down the hill, when he maneuvered across the centerline to pass other cars in his lane on their left side. When he went around the cars, he came face to face with the stopped bus.
In order to avoid hitting it head he swerved to the left, said the Mukilteo Police Department. When the driver swerved he struck the students and continued a short distance and then collided with a tree.
The girls were transported to Harborview Medical Center by ambulance and by helicopter.
One of the eighth grade girls was airlifted by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center for critical care. The other girl as well as the driver of the car was rushed by ambulance to area hospitals.
Of the two girls, one has been listed in serious condition and the condition of the other is unknown.
At the middle school, counselors are conducting evaluation and therapy sessions with those students on the bus that witnessed the accident.
Residents say this is not the first time they have seen problems stemming from drivers traveling to fast for this small, congested highway.
Car CRASH ON I-90 FATAL
The crash on I-90 westbound Wednesday morning involved at least two commuter vehicles and a semi, which burst into flames and burned. The Washington State Patrol was on hand to clean up the scene of the fatal traffic accident.
All lanes of westbound I-90 were closed but were reopened at 11:25 a.m.
According to reports, the paramedics were not even aware that a fatality was involved in the accident until the fire died down, and they were able to clearly take a look at a third vehicle wedged underneath the semi, with the driver still inside.
The crash scene contained images of firefighters battling to extinguish the early morning blaze on I-90, said the Department of Transportation.
During the cleanup, traffic was stopped for at least four miles, as commuters were slowly led around the accident on the right shoulder.
There is still an ongoing investigation into reports that an Acura may have crashed with one of the vehicles, then left the scene. Police have in their possession the license plate from that vehicle.
Police have not confirmed a reports that one victim jumped off the freeway overpass to avoid the fire.
