One Dead After Boat Capsizes

March 22, 2006

A life boat capsized Sunday as a container ship was running a safety drill, leaving one man dead and another in the hospital, the Coast Guard said.

Shortly before 9 a.m. a life boat carrying four people capsized during a safety drill for the container ship OOCL Britain at Terminal 18 in Seattle.

Seattle Fire Department Lieutenant Sue Stangl said that as the boat was being lowered, it got caught up on the gangway and flipped over.

All four men were recovered after being in the water for 20 minutes, but two were taken to a hospital, at least one of them unconscious, said Petty Officer Kurt Fredrickson.

One of the men, a 26-year-old, had died by the afternoon. A 50-year-old was recovering Sunday night. No identities were released.

The Coast Guard was investigating the cause of the accident.
