Two Young Girls Injured In Head-on Truck Collision

November 9, 2005

Two girls, identified as Amanda and Lydia Athey formerly of Eatonville, were driving in Bonney Lake when their car was struck head-on by a pickup.

The girls are daughters of former Eatonville residents, Lisa and Gordie Athey. The two were traveling in their red Hyundai when the pick-up truck ran into them

Rescue crews responded to the accident and needed the Jaws of Life to free the girls. They were rushed to Harborview Medical Center where they were admitted with serious injuries.

Amanda, age 20, sustained a crushed foot in the accident. The younger girl, Lydia, 15, was admitted with five compound fractures in her legs as well as broken knee. The girls both sustained cuts on their heads, arms, and hands from the breaking glass of the impact.

Investigators have been piecing together the events of the accident and determined that their combined speeds were over 100 mph. The driver of the pickup is suspected to have been driving under the influence when the accident happened.

There were two men in the pickup when it was split into three pieces in the accident. They were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma but doctors listed their injuries as non-life threatening.

Lydia required immediate surgery, lasting 8 hours each, to patch up her legs and knee. Amanda was set to undergo surgery on Monday.

According to a member of their family, they are worried that the medical bills will be greater than the family has. They are asking members of the community to help them cover the costs of the tragedy.
