Two-car Collision Leaves 4-year Old Dead

January 6, 2006

A two-vehicle accident that happened lat Monday afternoon has left a 4-year -old boy dead. The accident occurred on Cook Road, just west of Sedro-Woolley.

The boy has been identified as Diego Mantar-Lopez, from Sedro-Woolley. Diego was riding in a 1995 Mazda Protˇgˇ that was struck head-on by a 2005 Dodge Neon.

The Protˇgˇ was headed east on Cook Road near Collins Road when the westbound Neon swerved across the center line and collided with it.

The child's mother, Silveria Lopez Vazquez, 23, was driving the Protˇgˇ, according to a spokesman from the Skagit County Coroner's office.

Vasquez was taken to Skagit Valley hospital where she was treated for moderate injuries. Doctors have listed her in satisfactory condition.

Neil Marx, 42, of Bellingham, was driving the Dodge Neon when he swerved over the line. He was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital and released.

Marx was cited for 'unsafe passing' and is being named as the causer of the accident.

According to troopers, Marx was attempting to pass a car in the westbound lane when he swerved into the eastbound lane.

Initial investigation has revealed that the two cars may have attempted to swerve south, causing the Mazda to spin around. The Dodge then struck the car on the passenger side, killing the child.

Police are not sure if all the passengers were wearing their seat belts at the time.

Troopers have not found any reason to believe that alcohol played any part in the accident.

Immediately following the accident, the Dodge burst into flames. A passer-by stopped and put the fire out with an extinguisher.
