Seattle Head On Auto Collision

November 3, 2005

A head-on collision on Cape George Road sent three people to the hospital. The accident happened at about 9:45 a.m. Monday near Crutcher Road Traffic on Cape George road just outside of Port Townsend.

According to reports from the East Jefferson Fire Rescue Department, the accident occurred when a pickup truck with one man crashed into a van carrying a male and a female. The male and female were taken to the hospital where they are being treated for what doctors list as life-threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup only suffered moderate injuries.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and the Washington State Patrol.

Lifeflight was called to assist with the rescue efforts, but foggy conditions kept the helicopter grounded. The other avenue to take was to use military helicopters to help out but the red tape and the chain of command required to authorize it is difficult.

A helicopter ultimately left the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and was able to retrieve the female victim from the crash site.

The female was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. An ambulance took the elderly male victim to Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.

Authorities were disappointed with the intervention of weather in the rescue efforts. They report that Lifeflight is usually available to everyone that needs it in a trauma case.
