Three women were killed on Sunday when their car was crushed by a rockslide on I-90. Two of them, both 28, have been identified as Janet J. Ichikawa of Lynnwood and Janel A. Lindsey of Bothell.
The third victim has been identified as Heather E. Rider, also 28, of Castle Rock, according to the State Patrol. Police withheld the names of the victims until Monday.
According to state troopers, a rockslide triggered the fall of a large section of rock in the westbound lanes just after 1 a.m. Investigators speculate that recent rainfall played a part in the slide.
Rescue crews from the State Department of Transportation were occupied with removing debris and stabilizing the steep slope near the Franklin Falls bridge about two miles west of Snoqualmie Pass.
The freeway remained shut down until about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, closed to westbound traffic near Easton, about 70 miles southeast of Seattle and about 20 miles east of the crash site.
