Two cars were driving on the Ballard Bridge when they collided head-on, injuring five people. Police shut the bridge down for more than an hour on Sunday as they cleaned and investigated the scene.
A Jeep Cherokee was headed south around 10:45 a.m. when it swerved over the middle line to avoid hitting another car that was stopped on the bridge, according to a spokesman from the Seattle Police Department.
A minivan was traveling closely behind the Jeep when it swerved causing the van to swerve to avoid hitting the Jeep. The minivan crossed over the center line and directly into the path of an Audi station wagon headed north.
The minivan and the Audi were both totaled in the collision. There were also two other vehicles that sustained damage in the accident.
According to police, five of the people involved in the accident required medical attention and they were taken to Harborview Medical Center. Doctors have listed them all in stable condition.
Police closed the bridge until a little after noon, causing severe traffic problems during the shopping rush.
The bridge contains signs that ask motorists not to change lanes while crossing the bridge. The lanes are not separated by any barriers.
