A head-on collision on Wednesday was the scene of a tragedy for one Mennonite family in which five siblings were killed.
The five siblings were in a car driven by their father when a pickup truck came into their lane and struck them, said a spokesman from the Washington State Patrol. Five siblings who were members of a Mennonite family died when
Jeffrey B. Schrock was driving his five children south on U.S. 395 when another vehicle came across the median and directly into their lane. The two vehicles hit head-on at about 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday.
The five children were killed instantly in the accident. They have been identified as Carmen Joy Schrock, 12; Jana Louise Schrock, 10; Corina Jean Schrock, 8; Jerrill Burdiette Schrock, 5, and Creig Allen Schrock, 2.
All of the children were not wearing their seatbelts, said the State Patrol.
Police state that they have not found any reason to believe that drugs, alcohol, or speeding were contributing factors to the terrible accident. The truck driven by Schrock was almost unrecognizable as a truck.
Jeffrey Schrock, 38, was rushed to the Sacred Heart Medical Center where he was listed in serious condition.
The family was on their way to meet up with the mother, Carolyn Schrock, who was in Spokane shopping.
Clifford L. Helm, 55, of Deer Park, was driving the other truck and was listed in stable condition at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Police re-routed traffic around the scene, which occurred in the far northern suburbs of Spokane.
Witnesses to the accident reported that the accident shook windows in homes nearby. Many people tried to help the victims of the accident.
One of the girls was still breathing when certain witnesses approached the vehicle. They reported that they pulled a body off of her, but were not able to do anything else to help the girl.
Police are still trying to determine if the rain that day had been a factor in the accident.
