Driver In Accident Facing Charges For Being Drunk

January 6, 2006

A one-car crash left one woman injured after the car she was riding in slammed into a tree. She was taken to Harrison Medical Center and the driver is now facing charges for driving under the influence of alcohol.

A 26-year-old Belfair man was headed west in a 1992 Toyota Tercel when his car went flying off the road. The accident occurred on Northshore Road at about 10:30 p.m.

According to police, the man swerved and then attempted to overcorrect, sending him careening off the other side of the road. The car first slammed into a tree, and then continued down a 20-foot embankment.

The driver was taken to Mason General hospital where he was treated for minor cuts and bruises. The female passenger, a 19-year old Belfair woman, sustained more serious injuries, suffering a broken pelvis, broken arm and internal injuries.

Both the occupants of the car were wearing their seatbelt, and the car was completely totaled.

Police sent a copy of their report to the Mason County prosecutor who will decide if the driver will be charged with vehicular assault charges.
