3 HOSPITALIZED IN INTERSTATE 5 ACCIDENT
The two people killed and three were injured in a Tuesday, February 28 night crash on Interstate 5 were Blaine High School students returning from a school basketball game.
Three others injured in the 9:15 p.m. crash near Samish Way remained hospitalized Wednesday.
According to State Patrol Trooper Tim Crane, the driver of white 2004 Subaru Impreza was traveling north in the right lane with Brittney R. Armstrong, 17, Kailey L. Walter, 17, and Denise C. Hackett, 17, as passengers.
Trooper Tim Crane says that the Impreza was coming up behind at an extreme rate of speed and came upon a blue 1992 Subaru Legacy, driven by another Blaine High School student.
The State Patrol believes the Legacy driver moved to the left lane to let the Impreza pass, just as the Impreza moved over as well.
The cars collided, sending the Legacy spinning into the grass median and the Impreza spinning across the median into the southbound lanes, where it hit Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Judith L. Olson, 60, of Mount Vernon.
Gary Goldfogel, the Whatcom County medical examiner said that Brittney R. Armstrong, 17, and Kailey L. Walter, 17, had head and neck injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Denise C. Hackett, 17, was seriously wounded and taken to St. Joseph Hospital.
The driver, another Blaine High School student, was listed in satisfactory condition at St. Joseph.
Judith L. Olson was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center Wednesday evening, according to nursing staff.
The Legacy driver and the passenger, Blaine High School student Daniel Diaz, 17, were not injured.
The names of the teenage drivers are withheld while the crash is investigated.
The Washington State Patrol does not believe alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. An official ruling will be made after toxicology results come back in several weeks.
